Cotton Patrick looked at McNeil with disbelief etched on his face.

“Say what?”

“I want you to ride south on the cattle trail towards Young County until you find that herd. Tell the trail boss there is anthrax here, and he should give Dead Horse Crossing a wide berth if he doesn’t want to end up with a lot of dead cows.”

“I don’t think you understood what I said, McNeil. I tried to discourage as many of the Bar Deuce hands as possible before leaving. And a good many of them cleared out when I did. But, Sommers will still come against you with between ten and twenty guns. You’re already short-handed as it is. So, I think I ought to stay here for the fight.”

“Cotton, it’s the only option. We can’t get a wire out. Beeson won’t send it. I can’t go. Doc won’t be any use in the fight, but we will need him here after the shooting starts. So that only leaves you and Bud. You’re a far better horseman, and I know you’re familiar with the trail. And I trust you. Don’t you see? You’re the only choice for the job. We have to get the word to them.”

Patrick scratched his chin. “Okay, McNeil, I’ll do it. But I’m not too fond of the idea. I feel like I’m running out on you and the town.”

McNeil placed a hand on the young cowboy’s shoulder. “No, you’re not running out on anybody. You will accomplish the most important part of this. You might even save your town.”

Patrick nodded. “Okay, I’ll grab some supplies and get riding.”
